Karthuizerduinen - Nature

The Karthuizerduinen nature area lies near Groenendijk and the Noordzeedreef, on the eastern edge of the larger Ter Yde nature area. This small but special dune area is a lovely place for anyone wanting to enjoy peace, coastal nature and a short walk close to the sea.

What can you expect in the Karthuizerduinen?

• Eastern extension of Ter Yde: The Karthuizerduinen form the easternmost part of the extensive dune area Ter Yde, which also includes the Oostvoorduinen and the Hannecartbos.
• Varied dune landscape: Despite its limited size, you will find low dunes, dune grasslands, shrubs and damp dune valleys here. This gives the area a surprisingly varied feel.
• Flowers, birds and butterflies: In spring and summer, various wild dune plants bloom here. Among the shrubs and open dunes live songbirds, butterflies, insects and other small animals.
• Peaceful walking spot: The Karthuizerduinen are less well known than some other dune areas on the Belgian coast. As a result, it is often wonderfully quiet here.
• Close to the beach and sea: From the area, you can quickly walk towards the wide beach of Groenendijk. A visit is therefore easy to combine with a beach walk or a day by the sea.

A small area with a touch of history

The name Karthuizerduinen probably refers to a former Carthusian monastery that once stood in this area. Today, however, nature takes centre stage here. For walkers, nature lovers and photographers, this is a surprisingly peaceful stretch of the Belgian coast, where dunes, birds and the sea are never far away.
