Simliduinen - Nature

The Simliduinen nature area lies on the edge of Nieuwpoort-Bad and is a surprisingly peaceful stretch of nature close to the coast. This dune area of around 30 hectares consists of young dunes, damp dune slacks, flower-rich grasslands, moss dunes, shrubs and small woodland patches.

What can you expect in the Simliduinen?

• Varied dune landscape: Walk along winding sandy paths past open dunes, dune valleys and grasslands. Thanks to the differences in height, you get a different view again and again along the way.
• Wooden viewing platform: In the middle of the area there is a viewing platform with a beautiful panorama over the dunes. It is a lovely spot to pause for a moment and take in the landscape.
• Ponies in the area: Ponies graze in parts of the Simliduinen. They help keep the dune landscape open, giving special plants and animals more space.
• Rich nature: Dragonflies, damselflies and amphibians such as the natterjack toad live in the damp dune slacks. Special plants also grow here, including grass of Parnassus and marsh helleborine.
• Free roaming: On the side of the residential area there is a roaming zone where you may walk freely through the dunes. This lets you experience nature up close.
• Close to the beach and sea wall: The Simliduinen are within easy walking distance of Nieuwpoort-Bad’s beach. This makes a walk through the dunes easy to combine with a visit to the sea.

Walking in the Simliduinen

The Simliduinen are a pleasant place for anyone who wants to escape the bustle of the coast for a while. There are several access points, including via Kinderlaan, Louiseweg, Emile Verhaerenlaan and Elisalaan. A mountain bike route also runs along the western side.

Part of a larger dune area

The Simliduinen form part of the cross-border Westkust-Dunes de Flandre nature area, which stretches from Westende to French Dunkirk. This protected Natura 2000 area is among the most valuable dune landscapes on the Belgian coast.

For walkers, nature lovers and birdwatchers, the Simliduinen are a peaceful and surprisingly green destination close to Nieuwpoort-Bad.
