Hannecartbos - Nature

The Hannecartbos is a surprising nature area in Oostduinkerke, tucked away between the Karthuizerduinen, Ter Yde, Spelleplekke and Polderstraat. While the surrounding dune areas are mainly open and sandy, here you walk through a varied landscape of woodland, grasslands, hedgerows and a special dune stream.
What can you expect in the Hannecartbos?
Varied woodland landscape: The Hannecartbos was created in the 1920s on former grasslands and small dune fields. Originally, it served as the hunting estate of the Hannecart family, which is why some parts still have a park-like atmosphere.
- Woodland, grassland and dunes: During a walk, trees, open grasslands, damp low-lying areas and small dune hillocks alternate with one another. This makes the area feel very different from the well-known open dunes along the coast.
- Rare dune stream: A natural dune stream flows through the nature area. This is a special landscape feature on the Belgian coast and brings extra life to the area, with plants, insects and birds.
- Shetland ponies in the area: Shetland ponies graze in various places. They help keep the landscape open and prevent the grasslands from becoming completely overgrown with shrubs and young trees.
- Rich nature: Thanks to the combination of woodland, water and open nature, many birds, butterflies and small mammals live here. With a bit of luck, you may spot a woodpecker, buzzard or stork along the way.
