Doornpanne - Nature

The De Doornpanne nature area lies between Koksijde and Oostduinkerke and is one of the most beautiful dune areas on the Belgian coast. The area covers around 240 hectares and forms part of the larger Ter Yde nature area.
What can you expect in De Doornpanne?
Varied dune landscape: During a walk, you will discover high dunes, damp dune valleys, woodland, open grasslands and quiet sandy paths. Every season has its own charm here.
- Rich nature: Thanks to the great variety of landscapes, many plants and animals live here. You may come across rabbits, foxes, woodpeckers, buzzards, butterflies and special dune plants.
- Water extraction in the dunes: The Doornpanne has long been used for drinking water production. Rainwater is naturally filtered through the dunes, allowing nature and water extraction to come together here in a particularly beautiful way.
Walking and enjoying the scenery: Several walking routes run through the area along shell paths, sandy tracks and woodland trails. The routes are easy to combine with the Oosthoekduinen, Witte Burg, Ter Yde or the beach at Koksijde and Oostduinkerke.
Practical tips
- Accessibility: The Doornpanne is accessible all year round via several entrances.
Visitor centre: On the edge of the area you will find the visitor centre, where you can learn more about drinking water, the dunes and the nature of the Flemish coast. It is also a lovely addition to a walk for families.
Furthermore Doornpanne is near the following sights: Visitor Centre De Doornpanne (±400 m), Nature Education Centre Duinenhuis (±800 m), Riding School Ter Duinen (±900 m), Hoge Blekker (±1,0 km) & Witte Burg (±1,3 km).
