Spelleplekke - Nature

The nature area Spelleplekke is a small and peaceful dune area on the edge of Oostduinkerke, located between the Plaatsduinen and the Duinpark neighbourhood. It is not a large or busy nature reserve, and that is exactly what makes it such a pleasant place for anyone wanting to enjoy a moment of silence, dune nature and a short walk close to the sea.
What can you expect at Spelleplekke?
A quiet stretch of dune nature: Spelleplekke consists of low dunes, grasslands, shrubs and small woodland areas. The mix of open and sheltered spots creates a surprisingly varied landscape.
- Flowers, butterflies and birds: In spring and summer, various dune plants come into bloom, attracting butterflies, bees and other insects. Birds such as whitethroats, willow warblers, stonechats and different species of tits live among the shrubs.
- Pleasant walking connection: Narrow paths run through the area and connect with walking routes towards the Plaatsduinen, Ter Yde and the Hannecartbos. This makes Spelleplekke ideal as part of a longer dune walk.
- Views and tranquillity: From a few slightly higher dunes, you have a lovely view of the surrounding dunes and the buildings of Oostduinkerke. Despite being close to the beach, the area often feels remarkably peaceful.
Small, but surprisingly green
Precisely because Spelleplekke is less well known than the larger dune areas nearby, you will often encounter few other walkers here. It is a lovely place for a short nature break, a quiet detour during a walk or a moment to leave the bustle of the coast behind.
Furthermore Spelleplekke is near the following sights: Ter Yde (±650 m), Zeebermduinen (±850 m), Hannecartbos (±1,0 km), Oostvoorduinen (±1,2 km) & Tip-Top (±1,2 km).
