Sint-Laureinsduinen - Nature
The Sint-Laureinsduinen form a beautiful and varied nature area between Westende-Bad and the military domain Kwartier Lombardsijde. The dune area covers just over 45 hectares and is a pleasant place for a short walk close to the coast.
What can you expect in the Sint-Laureinsduinen?
- Walking through the dunes: Via the constructed walking paths, you can explore the area at a relaxed pace. The paths lead you through a landscape that feels natural, open and surprisingly varied.
- Special plants and animals: Typical dune plants grow in the restored dune slacks, while birds such as meadow pipit, linnet, whitethroat and stonechat have once again found a place here. With a bit of luck, you may also see butterflies and other insects among the dune vegetation.
- Traces of the past: The Sint-Laureinsduinen have a turbulent history. The former campsites, the influence of both world wars and the remains of bunkers from the Atlantic Wall are reminders that this peaceful nature area once had a very different function.
- Nature and coastal protection: The redevelopment focused not only on nature restoration, but also on coastal defence. Sand from the excavated dune slacks was used to strengthen the sea-defence dunes.

The Sint-Laureinsduinen are ideal for anyone who wants to leave behind the bustle of the beach and seafront for a while during a stay in Westende. It is not a large nature area, but that is exactly what makes it perfect for a short, peaceful walk where dunes, nature and history are close together.
- Access: The Sint-Laureinsduinen are public and free to visit via the walking paths. Please stay on the paths so that the fragile dune nature can continue to recover.
